Are Yams a Scam?
Confusion in the Kitchen:
Yams or Sweet Potatoes?
Yes and No!
We swing both ways on this one!
No: The yam’s exterior is known to be compared to tree bark, with its rough dark brown skin. While the inside’s texture is potato-like. Sweet potatoes have smooth reddish skin that is sweet when cooked.
When identifying them another easy trick is to look for eyes on the yam, like a potato. A sweet potato will have roots on its skin, like a beet.
Yes: In traditional American grocery stores, it is not likely to find yams in the produce section. But you say “I have yams every Thanksgiving!'" The canned yams we all see are technically sweet potatoes. The US Department of Agriculture requires that the label “yam” be accompanied by an additional label of “sweet potato.”
Whether you are pro yam or think yams are scams, we won’t be dealing with them on this year’s Italian Cooking Workshop of June 2024. Click below for more information on La Gioia Vita’s Italian Cooking Workshop on the Amalfi Coast!
