7 Must Know Tips for the Loan Wolf Traveler

Being alone is something we had to get used to over these past few years. Now that travel has opened back up, worldwide, it seems like people want to explore - whether or not - they have company! Here at La Gioia Vita, we are your travel friends, who want to give you some tips on traveling alone.

  1. Have Copies of your Passport

…and other IDs and note your Credit Card numbers and ticket info. When it comes down to it, cell phones can die and things get stolen or lost, a paper copy in a safe place could make all the difference.

  2. Check-in with the Embassy

at your destination (a pain, but a good safety measure).  Or at least know the location and have contact info - prior to travel sign up with the S T E P program through https://step.state.gov/step/

    see Link below for STEP

  3. Know The Signs - Literally

Before you go, get familiar with signage you’ll encounter while passing through the Airport / Train Station, i.e. words for Baggage Claim, Exit, Transportation area, Car Rental - and if you do plan to rent a car, get an International Driver’s License – usually at AAA.

  4. Key Phases

If you don’t speak the language, prepare by learning a few key phrases, words, and comments.  Familiarize yourself with names for days of the week, months, and who, what, where, when, and how phrases.  Timetables often use the 24-hour clock, I jot down a “cheat sheet” starting with 1 pm = 1300 etc.  I have come to learn, the people you meet don’t expect fluency, but they do appreciate an effort to communicate

  5. Be aware of your surroundings,

Avoid walking around wearing earbuds/headphones. Keep your Hotel’s card on hand with its address and contact info

  6. Clothing

Comfortable and appropriate. Do your homework and research your destination(s) customs. For example, when traveling to Vatican City, Italy you must have your knees and shoulders covered, to enter into The Vatican. You will receive a poncho if you are not adhering to the dress code.

  7. Bag, Satchel, Fanny Pack -

    Whatever your style is!

It is important to have something, light, and easy to access while traveling. If you are alone feel free to bring a smaller bag - as there will be less to carry. However, if you use a backpack, either stay very aware of your surroundings or wear it on your front side.
