3 - days plein air painting instruction
This workshop takes place in and around Woodbury, CT, in the heart of the Litchfield County of CT. It will be autumn in Connecticut and tree colors will be changing! All artists must have their own transportation. Upon registration, we will also include a supply list.
Sam D'Ambruoso has been teaching workshops in Italy and the USA for the past 28 years. Only 8-10 artists in a group ensures plenty of one-on-one attention and there are over 50% of returning artists and guests every year.
Our workshops help artists achieve the next level of painting skills. Our objectives are:
- To have each student understand the 6 steps to a better landscape painting.
- Developing composition in art
- Color theory and color mixing
- How to develop better values
- how to handle the all-important shadow edges
- Why scale of the object or landscape really tells the story of the painting.
Beginners to advanced students welcome as well as all media.

2- days plein air painting instruction in Newport, RI. One of the East Coast’s most important sea-faring locations, you will paint rich subject matter like marinas, farms, waves & rocks, even a historic windmill.
During free time - or take an extra day or 2 - visit the fabulous Newport “summer cottages” built by the 19th century elite. Fly your kite at Brenton’s Point, go fishing, or stroll along Newport’s panoramic Cliff Walk.

March 2025 - Red Rocks, Blue Skies
We are excited to offer a 4 days plein air painting workshop in the West’s unique “picture postcard” landscape. Sedona is like no other place in America, once you visit you’ll never forget it. Artisans of all disciplines find deep inspiration and peace here. Paint among the majestic red rocks, dessert fauna, flora, and the spectacular giant saguaro cactus.
Sedona is just a 2 hour drive from Phoenix; and further north the Grand Canyon, is only a 2 hour drive from Sedona through the magnificent scenery of Oak Creak Canyon. So much to paint and so much to do in either direction!

4 days plein air painting instruction in the West Coast’s center of natural beauty and history. Artists have flocked here from early times to capture the wild Pacific Ocean, plunging cliffs and soaring redwoods. Bring along a “writer” friend who will love visiting the area to experience John Steinbeck’s inspiration for many of his novels.
